Follow-Up of the Day: George Zimmerman May Be Charged With Hate Crime: George Zimmerman, currently facing second-degree murder charges in the February 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, also may be charged with a hate crime. According to Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV:

WFTV has learned charges against George Zimmerman could be getting more serious.
State prosecutors said Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, profiled and stalked 17-year-old Trayvon Martin before killing him, so the FBI is now looking into charging him with a hate crime.
Zimmerman admitted to killing Martin in February during a confrontation. However, he claims the shooting was in self-defense. He’s facing a second-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. But if Zimmerman is charged and found guilty of a federal hate crime involving murder, he could face the death penalty.
FBI investigators are actively questioning witnesses in the retreat at the Twin Lakes neighborhood, seeking evidence for a possible federal hate crime charge.

Second degree murder for point blank shooting a kid dead? Yeah, ok.

This was the culmination of a 50 mile march from Daytona to Sanford.
Really inspiration stuff to see people using their agency for a good cause.

Almost six million children live in poverty in this country. Almost six million of them are without health insurance of any kind, and that’s reckoned to be an improvement. None of this is accidental. These children are expendable because the people we elect make policy decisions of which we approve — or, at least, of which we do not disapprove. The Republicans in Congress — behind the “leadership” of zombie-eyed granny-starver Paul Ryan — would like to zero out the SCHIP children’s health-care program. If they do that, it will not be done by accident. The Florida legislature, behind the leadership of the National Rifle Association, passed the “stand your ground” law, despite the fact that even police and prosecutors were warning that it amounted to a hunting license for anyone who had both a gun, and the ability to concoct a good story. Trayvon Martin is not dead by accident.

ABC News reports that the lead investigator in Trayvon Martin shooting wanted manslaughter charge against Zimmerman. The lead investigator, Chris Serino, stated he was unconvinced by Zimmerman’s version of events. I found this article pretty interesting.

Just finished reading it. Glad I did. Damn.

This article really hits it right on the head.

A movement, which might have started with the best of intentions, is now the province of privilege and self-satisfaction. Joy.

Unfortunately I missed this when it was happening last night. Here is some info on what happened yesterday.

BREAKING: Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee steps down..."temporarily."*

motherjones:

Riiiiiiiiiight.

Exerpt: “A sergeant in the department, Scott O’Connor, will take over Lee’s duties during the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Central Florida city is bracing itself for a mass march for Trayvon Martin at 7 p.m. today, led by the Rev. Al Sharpton. That rally comes on the heels of the “million hoodie march,” a major demonstration that Mother Jonescovered from the trenches in New York yesterday. For their part, Trayvon’s parents reportedly meeting with officials from the Justice Department right now, and will make a public statement shortly after the meeting.”

If you can go, please do and show your support. In 2012, this should not be a problem but it is. When push comes to shove, this country has shown again and again that when it matters most, non-white citizens are just less important and more dispensable. Tell everyone that that is not OK. We pay police salaries with our tax money. MINORITIES DESERVE EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW. THE POLICE ARE CIVIL SERVANTS, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT AND SERVE US. A MURDERER IS WALKING FREE BECAUSE HE KILLED A LITTLE BROWN BOY INSTEAD OF A MIDDLE-CLASS LITTLE WHITE BOY. THIS IS DISGUSTING AND IT NEEDS TO STOP.

*Trayvon’s Law

girlebony:

After seeing the Mother Jones posting that links to Glen Beck calling him “the aggressor” (among other things I can’t bare to type right now) I had this thought… If Trayvon were a little white girl, we’d have Trayvon’s Law by now. By now. Three weeks later. True story. At least some legislature. Some angry little team of white mothers would be up in arms. Having candlelight vigils every other day. They’d be lobbying for gun control or mandatory holding of suspects in murder investigations of children or something. Anything. And they’d be going at it as if their lives depended on it. The lives of Black children just might depend on it, but that registers much less when the victim’s name is Trayvon as opposed to MeganSarah or Amber.

It’s worthy of note that there is a law named after a young Black girl in NY. It’s called Extacy’s Law (Forgive me if I’m misspelling her name). Extacy’s Law relates to mandated reporting of suspected child abuse. Certainly a worthy law and that young baby’s death was absolutely tragic. But it’s painfully obvious what this means in comparison to the laws referenced above. When the perpetrator is outside of the family, the deaths of young white girls draws a call to arms. Laws are created to protect them from outsiders. It takes a young Black girl dying from abuse and neglect at the hands of her family to ignite the same kind of response. This tells us that according to legislature, Black kids need legal protection from Black families. White kids need legal protection from all of the harms of the world outside their families.

In a just world we could create Trayvon’s Law. I’d prefer it to be Trayvon’s Law for Stomping a Hole in Racist Fake Ass Vigilantes though.

When police look for a suspect, my dad said, the first place they go is to any group of black males loitering curbside. “You can’t be standing around, doing nothing,” Dad said.

Florida Teen’s Killing: A Parent’s Greatest Fear by Corey Dade (via npr)

Wow. If a white male in a 3-piece suit is standing around, people will assume he’s waiting for someone to pick him up or for a taxi or meeting with someone to walk somewhere legit. If a black male in jeans and a hoodie is standing around, he’s casing the area, looking for somewhere to rob, going to make a drugs transaction… Solid police work. They teach you a lot at police academy, don’t they? Tax-payers are signing the paychecks for these idiots to be racist dicks while upper-class rich white people get away with murder in cold blood. You wonder why minorities don’t trust law enforcement when they treat us like this?

*We Have A Serious Problem. #TrayvonMartin

fuckyeahfeminists:

elonjames:

To raise awareness about the #millionhoodies march and general online campaign I’ve posted the picture below on my social networks. This was the response on one of them.

[REDACTED]: Um no. This guy IS suspicious. I would totally purse clutch and traffic dodge to avoid and I’m not sure of the message here. March for hoodies?

[REDACTED]: I grasp the point racism is rasicm, no dress code needed. But we need to watch our PR and how our message is distributed. The above is not helping or helpful to disseminate the message. It’s an image of a thug in a hoodie. Treyon was not a thug, he was a child and this is the image that should be used. And the main goal is to make the “point” as EASY to grasp as possible. We can march and protest and leverage petitions, but if our attitude is, “read between the lines to get my point”, then we move no one. We also need to utilize the most powerful, personable images we have. This guy is not one of them.

Elon James White (me): Oh HI [REDACTED] I’m the image of the “Thug in a hoodie.” Do you know who I am? Do you know what I do? You said that THAT’s an image of a thug in a hoodie and TREYVON WASNT A THUG. Ma’am, I’m not a thug. I’m an engaged political commentator with a background in I.T. I throw dinner parties and build studios from scratch. But YOU saw a thug in a hoodie.

Do you understand the problem now?

[REDACTED]: I’m sure youve very accomplished, and my comments don’t take away from that. But I see a thug in a hoodie. You may not like it, and I dont know you, but I can ONLY see the photo. We disagree. I can stomach that.

Elon: Can you read your own words? The type of thought process you have right now is why Tayvon Martin was stalked and killed. He “looked like a thug” even though he wasn’t. To MANY people a Negro in a hoodie is a thug. That is not right. That is not okay. That is the POINT of the march today. That is the point of the online campaign to wear hoodies in solidarity.

Under no circumstances should I or ANYONE be looked at as a threat because they put a hoodie on.

—-

And by the way? [REDACTED] is black.

serious problem indeed.

I have this problem as well. If I go to an affluent neighborhood because I’m meeting some friends, I get looks. Guess what? People wear hoodies because it’s comfortable, it’s warm, it’s cheap and it’s convenient. It’s a sweater with a hat. Are you fucking kidding me? The people who you need to be afraid of and concerned about don’t wear baggy jeans, don’t have multi-colored hair, don’t have piercings and tattoos, don’t wear lots of fake jewelry, don’t look ‘alternative’ or ‘punk’ or ‘street’. The people you need to worry about, who are killing you slowly and stealing your money with a smile on their face ARE WEARING 3-PIECE SUITS, WITH GUCCI SHOES AND RIDING IN LIMOS. THEY ARE PREDOMINANTLY MIDDLE-AGED WHITE MALES AND THEY ARE CEO, THEY ARE SENATORS, THEY ARE OLD MONEY, THEY OWN COMPANIES THAT KILL PEOPLE AND ENSLAVE PEOPLE OVERSEAS BECAUSE THEY KNOW NO ONE CARES IF YOU’RE NOT WHITE. THEY ARE THE REAL DRUG LORDS THAT SMUGGLE HEROIN AND COCAINE AND OTHER ILLICIT SUBSTANCES INTO THE COUNTRY AND PASS THEM OFF TO POOR REGULAR PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST HAPPY FOR THE INCOME SO THEY CAN BE SHOT AND PUT IN JAIL AND NO ONE WILL QUESTION WHO THE REAL PROBLEM IS. THEY TAKE OVER SMALL BUSINESSES AND BUY AND SELL LAND AND PEOPLE LIKE THEY’RE NOTHING. THEY MAKE PROBLEMS DISAPPEAR. THEY OWN COUNTRY CLUBS AND PLAY GOLF WHILE KIDS LIKE TRAYVON MARTIN ARE BEING PROFILED AND GUNNED DOWN IN COLD BLOOD.

BUT IT’S ALL RIGHT CUZ IT’S ALL WHITE.

So, let’s stay in the dark and think that someone’s fashion sense dictates who they are. Let’s keep ‘clutching our purses’ and crossing the street to avoid ‘young thugs’ who probably just want to ask for directions or are just walking along, minding their own business. I’m saying that anyone can be dangerous and anyone can be innocent and racism and prejudice will not help you. Use common sense. I’ve walked alone on city streets and nothing has happened to me, not because I’m afraid of brown people in hoodies. I grew up around people you would think are violent little street runners and let me tell you, there is good and bad in every single little section of humanity so you cannot isolate one group and say ‘all of these kinds of people are bad’ because they’re not and that’s stupid. Stereotypes are for people who have given up on thinking and you seem pretty brain-dead to me.

Social Media Put Florida Shooting Case In National Spotlight *

npr:

Scores of people signed online petitions to Attorney General Eric Holder, asking the Justice Department to investigate the killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer. The case shows the power of social networking to quickly mobilize advocates in sometimes volatile situations.

More on the Trayvon Martin case.

I love how the news will cover the story for less than a minute then move on to talk about what’s going on with someone who talked a dog off of a ledge. Dog probably would have been fine because it could go back in the way it came out but let’s focus on that because ‘lol teen minorities murdered in a hate crime based on racism in a gated community and honestly, who cares cuz puppies!!!11’

Why is the murderer not in prison for murder in the first degree?

Also, people are asking why the “Obama White House” isn’t talking about this. WHY AREN’T THE LOCAL POLICE DOING THEIR JOB AND ARRESTING THE MURDERER WHO ADMITTED TO SHOOTING AN UNARMED TEEN IN A GATED COMMUNITY AT NIGHT AFTER FOLLOWING HIM IN HIS CAR BECAUSE HE LOOKED ‘SUSPICIOUS’, AKA BLACK???? THE PRESIDENT IS BUSY RUNNING THE COUNTRY SO HOW ABOUT EVERYONE DOES THEIR OWN JOB AND THE POLICE ACTUALLY LOCK UP A MURDERER??? HOW ABOUT THAT?

Instead of wasting time asking why the president isn’t wiping everyone’s ass individually, people should be bombarding the local police department, forcing everyone to see what they are doing and going to a REASONABLE higher authority on the matter, like the state police, and going to court to investigate exactly why the local police haven’t arrested a murderer who admitted to the murder. That’s the logical thing to do but no, jk, let’s bother the president who is the king of all racist affairs. This is dumb.
